New edition released!

Carson and Moo have thoroughly reworked this book, removing or revising Morris' contributions and adding much new material for the second edition. Some sections are rearranged, and there are a few entirely new sections. I read the original book straight through a few years ago, and I haven't found anything else that does quite as good a job of staying on top of the current scholarship while defending generally conservative evangelical views on the authorship, date, setting, purpose, and other backgrounds sorts of issues on each NT book. I expect the updated edition to be equally thorough and more up-to-date on recent trends in NT scholarship.

Particularly of note is the section on the New Perspective on Paul, which Morris and Carson have both been on the forefront of interacting with (from a more traditional perspective in both cases, though both have been willing to acknowledge that we have learned something from the NPP). They call this section brief in the introduction, but it's 11 pages, a fair amount of space compared to how much room they give to most topics. They have also provided a lengthy addition covering the history of interpretation of the NT, from the early Christians to contemporary biblical scholarship. They've also expanded of added more on the content of each book, something reviewers complained about in the first edition, and there's also a little bit on the social science approaches to NT studies, something that wasn't very far along in the original book. All in all, the new edition sounds as if it should be excellent.

They've removed the dust jacket and replaced it with a visually appealing cover on the book itself, and they've increased the margin size significantly, both of which suit its primary use as a seminary textbook. They list the intended audience as seminary students in the first and second years, but a studious enough person can read it for profit without the additional seminary background. I read the entire first edition without any seminary training at all. It's certainly not the level of detail a scholar would want for an exhaustive treatment of every issue, but the bibliographies and footnotes can provide further reading to get exactly that, and it would be ill-suited for students if it tried to do too much.

This has been the standard evangelical NT introduction for quite a while, and as of the revision its place will be secured for quite a while.

A Fine Introduction

As others have noted, this NT Introduction is a standard introductory text from an evangelical perspective. In this updated version, Carson and Moo add some good stuff on canonicity that was not part of the original Carson/Moo/Morris edition. Most of the remaining material is similar.

As can be expected, the analysis and conclusions in this Introduction are decidedly conservative on questions of authorship, canonicity, original situation of the writings, and historical reliability of the documents. The authors helpfully analyze many contemporary challenges to evangelical understandings of the NT so that the beginner and intermediate levels of readers will gain a good introductory grasp of the many bones of contention that exist over many issues in virtually every book of the NT. Moo's strong work in Romans and James, coupled with Carson's strong work on the Fourth Gospel, can be particularly seen in this book's treatment of these canonical documents.

One could have hoped for a more lengthy treatment of contemporary issues, and one could also have hoped for more robust bibliographies upon which the reader could proceed with more in-depth study. But because this is an introductory work, it is probably inappropriate to expect such things in this kind of treatment. The beginner who wants to develop a good working knowledge of NT scholarship from an evangelical perspective will likely be quite satisfied with what they find in here.

Thorough and Provocative

In this new edition of Intro to the NT Carson and Moo have significantly improved the work they initially published with Leon Morris (who has since passed away). The chapters are reorganized, the margins are wider, and the material has expanded to include the contribution of works published since the first edition. Having used both editions for coursework and personal study, I find the second edition far superior. While the layout of the first edition was doable, the second is much roomier and suitable for study. More than all these considerations, the authors superbly point the reader to Christ, to become like him. I have been challenged not only academically as I've read this work, I have been also been convicted spiritually.

About the Author
Terence Conran is one of the world's best-known designers, restaurateurs and retailers. In the 1960s he founded Habitat - the chain of homeware stores that brought good, modern design within reach of the general population for the very first time. Over the subsequent 50 years Terence built another group of companies centred around design, retailing, restaurants and hotels. Today, Conran Associates owns restaurants and shops in eight cities throughout the world and a design business serving many international clients that includes architecture and interior design, product and graphic design and brand licensing. In January 2011 Conran Associates began working with Marks & Spencer in the UK, designing an exclusive range of homewares for the store. In 2012 Conran Associates signed a deal to collaborate with US retail giant jcpenney to design an exclusive range of furniture, lighting and accessories for the home. The initial collection launched in spring 2013 into 300 jcpenney stores throughout the US and there will be new ranges launching each spring and autumn. Terence Conran was knighted for his services to design in 1983 and has been provost of the Royal College of Art in London. In 1982 he opened the very first museum in the world dedicated to design, which is now the celebrated Design Museum in London, due to move to new premises in 2015 thanks to a massive expansion programme.

In this first book-length study of Robert Ryman, Suzanne Hudson traces the artist's production from his first paintings in the early 1950s, many of which have never been exhibited or reproduced, to his recent gallery shows. Ryman's largely white-on-white paintings represent his careful working over of painting's conventions at their most radically reduced. Through close readings of the work, Hudson casts Ryman as a painter for whom painting was conducted as a continuous personal investigation. Ryman's method -- an act of "learning by doing" -- as well as his conception of painting as "used paint" sets him apart from second-generation abstract expressionists, minimalists, or conceptualists.

Ryman (born in 1930) is a self-taught artist who began to paint in earnest while working as a guard at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the 1950s. Hudson argues that Ryman's approach to painting developed from quotidian contact with the story of modern painting as assembled by MoMA director and curator Alfred Barr and rendered widely accessible by director of the education department Victor D'Amico and colleagues. Ryman's introduction to artistic practice within the (white) walls of MoMA, Hudson contends, was shaped by an institutional ethos of experiential learning. (Others who worked at the MoMA during these years include Lucy Lippard, who married Ryman in 1961; Dan Flavin, another guard; and Sol LeWitt, a desk assistant.)

Hudson's chapters -- "Primer," "Paint," "Support," "Edge," and "Wall," named after the most basic elements of the artist's work -- eloquently explore Ryman's ongoing experiment in what makes a painting a painting. Ryman's work, she writes, tests the medium's material and conceptual possibilities. It signals neither the end of painting nor guarantees its continued longevity but keeps the prospect of painting an open question, answerable only through the production of new paintings.

Adopting as her lodestar the artist's assertion that the question that engages him is not what to paint but how to paint, Suzanne Hudson incisively addresses 'meaning insofar as it attends method' in Ryman's work over the past five decades. As she explores the extraordinary level of formal invention he has brought to bear on this bedeviling question, she persuasively grounds his practice in a form of Dewey-derived Pragmatism, and thereby brilliantly circumvents the twin shoals of 'antiaesthetic historicism and anticonceptual hedonism' on which most previous commentators have foundered.

Her focus is Ryman's practice (its recycling and recombination of the painter's concerns: support, paint, edge, wall) and its emergence in the pedagogical milieu of modernism's temple, the Museum of Modern Art. Robert Ryman's white

This book offers a great view of the not-so-often understood white painting of Robert Ryman. It puts his art in relation with another artists, schools and movements, and there's an exhaustive reproduction of almost his entire creations over his long career.

Definitely recommended for any abstract-painting lover and Ryman's admirer. Like me, by the way!

Elegant Book

This is one of the most elegantly written, keenly insightful, and useful books I have ever read on a single artist. It explains in astonishingly clear prose the mesmerizing quality as well as what can sometimes feel like the inexplicability of Robert Ryman's white paintings. Hudson offers a way in to Ryman's work that makes me love his paintings even more than I did before reading this text. She also does an amazing job of explaining American pragmatism.
I've never commented on another review before-- but the comments made by an earlier reviewer who thought the book was just an extended effort to say what others have already said are crazy. Not only is this simply wrong (Hudson's analysis is thoroughly original), but some of the people this reviewer mentions actually wrote their texts on Ryman after Hudson's book.

Art criticism as it should be done

Suzanne Hudson has written a stunning and moving response to Robert Ryman's painting. (When was the last time you heard such adjectives used to describe a work of contemporary art criticism?). She even takes on Rosalind Krauss... and somehow MIT press, the postmodern press of choice, still published it! Unlike so many other critics, Hudson takes as her task the leading of the reader into a more profound and sensitive encounter with Ryman's paintings, rather than attempting merely to snare the reader into awestruck obeisance to the critic's perspicacity. She almost never falls into opaque prose or solipsistic neologisms. Her writing instead tends to clarity, precision, and sensitive insight, which deepen the reader's appreciation for Ryman's courageous undertakings. Like the best of critics of any period, Hudson focuses on the work of art as a material product, which also resonates with particular aesthetic goals and attitudes and with the particular dilemmas of its historical moment-in-time. She provocatively teases these resonances out of a close and careful observation of the specifics of Ryman's facture and never mistakes her interpretations for the artist's production. Reading this book uplifted me and affirmed myriad possibilities for all those of us who are artists and art historians alike. Thank you, Dr. Hudson.

A study of the mental workings of some great mathematicians

This is a short study of how creative thought works. Hadamard, a world-class mathematician best known for his proof of the prime number theorem in 1896, wrote this in the 40's, basing it on correspondence with many of the great living mathematicians of his time. The actual questions he posed are preserved in an appendix.
Most of his respondents were mathematicians (and he limited his correspondence to the best minds in the field), but he did get information from several other fields, and cites data about physicists (a letter from Einstein forms another appendix), chemists, physiologists, metaphysicians, and so on. What he is trying to examine is a slippery subject, perhaps best explained by a quote. Here is a discussion of Sidgwick, an economist: "His reasonings on economic questions were almost always accompanied by images, and the images were often curiously arbitrary and sometimes almost undecipherably symbolic. For example, it took him a long time to discover that an odd symbolic image which accompanied the word 'value' was a faint, partial image of a man putting something on a scale."
Hadamard gives his own mental images that accompany his following through the steps of Euclid's famous proof of the infinitude of primes. I won't reproduce that here for space reasons, but the contrast with Sidgwick's--and with other reports of mental activity--is fascinating. Many other examples are given, from Mozart to Polya to Galton to Poincare. Hadamard makes it clear that language and thought are not the same thing, contrary to a commonly expressed view among linguists. He cites Max Muller's comments equating thought and language, and acknowledges that for Muller it may be so, but convincingly demonstrates, by quoting numerous other mathematicians, that it is not true for everyone. The further conclusion, that the process of creative thought, while following similar patterns in similar discipline, can vary dramatically, is as far as Hadamard can go with the data he has.
One other note: this book was originally titled "The Psychology of Invention in the Mathematical Field" and is available under that title from Amazon, published by Dover Books. It's not immediately clear from the Amazon page that this is so. The Dover edition is substantially cheaper.

The Psychology of Math

The Mathematician's Mind is a study on how research mathematicians go about the business of advancing their field. Jacques Hadamard, a prominent mathematician, wrote this psychology text over 50 years ago, after having done his best work 50 years prior. Although in some ways dated, both in content and in writing style, the book provides an interesting examination of the role of the conscious and subconscious in solving a problem, particularly the process of incubation and (seemingly) sudden inspiration. He brings up the roles intuition and logic play in the way various mathematicians go about their business. Hadamard also examines the influence of aesthetics in not just choosing a problem, but in solving it. He studies the choice of research direction, with the interesting comment that Hadamard himself avoided areas of research where there was already a great deal of activity.
The book is short enough that if the subject interests you, it is worth your time.
The text is also published under the title "The Psychology of Invention in the Mathematical Field."

Not only is this book fascinating, it's the only one of it's kind. The book has also proved very useful to me in life. As a graduate student I used Poincar�'s implicit `advice' (described in the book) in the following way. In electrodynamics we had a long problem sheet to hand in every two weeks. I started by writing down answers to all problems that I knew. Then, I thought about the next-easiest problem each day walking twice to and from the University (about 1 1/2 hours altogether). When the answer came I wrote it down and iterated the process. Before the end of two weeks most of the problems (from Jackson) had been solved. Poincari's advice is very good about giving the unconscious a chance to work. Phooey and double phooey on the silly, uncreative skinner-box types and other behaviorists who don't recognize the unconscious as the source of creativity!

About the Author
Charlotte Keatley is best-known for her play "My Mother Said I Never Should, " which has been named by the National Theatre as one of The Significant Plays of the Twentieth Century. More recently, Charlotte Keatley's play "Our Father" premiered at the Watford Palace Theatre. She has written for radio, television and film, and has won the George Devine Award, Manchester Evening News Best New Play Award, a Time Out Award, and was nominated for an Olivier Award as Most Promising Newcomer.

All women must read this!

I found it complex to grasp at the start due to the time lapses and the use of children scenes to represent a different world, but as soon as i got past this i realised this was not only an interesting, but very educational read. The characters are four generations of the same family, therefore it is very clever that the play is circular. Making the reality of these womens lives mirror there mothers past. I personally enjoyed the book because there was always something that related to something already said, making you sympathise with each character but also smiling at the irony.

It misses the density of love

Four generations of women together on the stage, and absolutely no men. Four generations disguised as three because the daughter of the third generation woman is raised as the daughter of the second generation woman, hence as the sister of her own mother, a mother out of wedlock. But that is a detail that only get pregnant, if I can say so, when the woman of the fourth generation finds out the one she considered her sister is in fact her mother. From the first generation, a woman who had to work hard to bring her daughter to a better beginning, we move to the second generation where the beginning of the next generation is more or less guaranteed after World War 2, but the independent spirit of that third generation brings an affair with a married man, who has two children on his own and of course never keeps his word about marrying the pour late teenager who gets pregnant at first sexual contact. Complete lack of sexual education and emotional education. The mother is of course responsible. Who else could be responsible for that complete lack of emotional and sexual education? School can at best give some information on sex but not on love. Only a mother for a daughter and a father for a son can provide with such an initiation more than an education. The fourth generation is even worse as for her independence and lack of care for anything, except the mottos of some punk fundamentalist. But what's left after these two hours of theater? I am afraid not much. The feminine point of view on the tremendous evolution from 1935 to today is not bringing anything new except that women can easily fall under, be the victims of some institutionalized blindness that is perfectly relayed by what I would call a freewheeling carelessness disguised in the latest generation as carefulness that is just a fa�ade since it corresponds to little. That Rosie girl understand her Jackie sister is in fact her mother, but that does not seem to throw her into some deep thinking trance or emotional existential experience. She could have been told her real mother was a vampire or a dragon she would not have been moved one iota more. And in fact the only significant symbol in that play is the solitaire game that reveals the patience and fate of women is to play solitaire games when men are doing the real thing outside in society. The second generation woman who raised her own third generation daughter and the fourth generation daughter, is the only one who really feels the rub somewhere and dies early, at work, working to raise the daughter of her own daughter. Absurd and in many ways silly. Where is the message in that early death of the enslaved second generation woman who is the victim of her own daughter? From where I stand there is no meaning and it is a case of overexploitation of one woman by her own daughter. Worse than slavery. Just plain overexploitation.

What really is the Wasteland?

This is one of the best modern plays I have ever read! This play is a powerful contemporary feminist drama and portrays the lives and hardships of four generations of women of the same family. The action does not always take place chronologically - which can confuse - and occurs between the 1920's and 1980's. It documents some of societies changing opinions and views towards the roles of women. The wasteland scenes are perhaps some of the most interesting in the play. It is in these scenes when all four women can be seen as in their own part of the century as children playing together. The notes included with this edition of the play are most helpful as is the forward by Charlotte Keatley.

Excellent conclusion to an addictive series

Zero hour is the long-awaited conclusion to the Gypsy Brothers' series. Each book is like a roller coaster ride on crack- slap to the face pacing that leaves the reader with whiplash. Once hooked on episode one, be prepared to binge-read the series in its entirety, leaving you sleepless and a bit ornery when interrupted.

At the end of One Love, I felt many emotions: satisfaction, heartbreak, and relief I was finally getting off the ride, hoping to get my equilibrium back. I wanted to know more about our broken Juliette- the girl was consumed by her own vengeance, making her just as bad, if not worse, than her victimizers. I felt the story had met its conclusion, but I was interested in whether it was possible for Juliette to truly have an HEA with all the taint on her soul. So I was equally shocked and intrigued when Zero Hour was announced- most readers were expecting a fluffy happy ending.

But Lili St. Germain is not fluffy.

Zero Hour was dark and gritty, wading through all the haunting pain, guilt, and resentment by the narrators. But what else could you expect after seven brutal installments?

A review is either to sell a reader on a book, or to dissuade them from buying. But if you've already read the seven previous installments, I don't think anything I have to say will do either. Just realize, don't start the book unless you have time to finish it in one sitting, as you'll be hard-pressed to put it down.

What I Thought

I have followed Jase and Julz throughout the whole Gypsy Brothers series, so I was excited to hear about and then receive an ARC of their epilogue.
Jason and Juliette are in hiding from Julian Dornan and the rest of the Gypsy Brothers and also from The Cartel, with Luis, Elliott and his ex Amy and their daughter, while the DEA investigates and tries to uncover more evidence to be able to make arrests. If they manage to stay alive until this can happen, if they testify against the Gypsy Brothers and the Cartel, they will get immunity from everything they have previously done.
They are all tired of always having to be on their toes, away from home and on tenderhooks. Waiting for the next call, to again say they have to move as their enemies are moving in.
On top of this, Jason and Juliette are struggling individually and as a couple. Their minds constantly wandering to dark places. Secrets from their pasts that could threaten to completely tear them apart. Everything going around in their minds is ugly. They each feel the other is pulling away and are in despair as to how to fix it.
When they get yet another call to say the Cartel has arrived in Miami and they need to move, the group decide to take things into their own hands. They want their lives back. They decide to go home and fight.
But are this group of friends strong enough to take on both the Gypsy Brothers and the Cartel? Can Jase and Julz overcome the darkness that has taken over their minds? Or are these two battles simply too big to take on?
So wow….. I didn’t expect so much from this epilogue. I’m used to reading all hearts, flowers and happiness in epilogues, Zero Hour however, was dark and raw and edgy and I LOVED IT!! It keeps you on the edge of your seat, knawing away at your fingernails, anxious for what is going to come next.
The emotions were so deep throughout, that it pulled me in. I was so worried for Jason and Juliette, I felt like I was right there with them. It was sad to read of their pain, regrets and guilt.

“He’s dead….. he’s dead but your the one that’s gone.”

Dornan may of been dead, but he was still very much in both of their lives, somehow still causing trouble. Jase and Julz have been through so much, both together and apart, will they ever get a break.
Zero Hour is written mainly from Jason and Juliette’s point of view, with the odd chapter written from Elliott. The length is just perfect enough to be descriptive and full to the brim with action without being dragged out.
This is an intense, fast paced and emotional conclusion to Jason and Juliette’s story. One of the best epilogue’s to a story I have read so far!!

Finding Safty and Peace

This was a really great end to an amazing series. In the last book, Juliette and Jason finally got their revenge and Dornan, his father Elliot, and all Jason's brothers are finally dead. But their story wasn't over and they didn't just walk into the sunset. Juliette, Jase, and Elliot are all still running from the remaining Gypsy Brothers Motorcycle Club and the Il Sange Cartel. Elliot's younger brother is now head of the Cartel. They can't stay in one place for too long and Elliot is trying to protect his daughter and her mother. No one is happy and no one is safe. Juliette cries all the time and Jase has so much anger and hurt built up in him. Jase feels like a monster because of the things Dornan used to do to him and how he is now and what turns him on. He loves Julz with all of his heart but he's hurt and angry about the baby. He's scared about sharing with her what happened to him and what he's become.

Definitely worth reading and a wonderful end to this series.

About the Author
Bill Phillips is the leading author of locksmithing books, including this best-selling classic. He also wrote McGraw-Hill's Locksmithing, a part of the Craftmaster series, and the Complete Book of Electronic Security, also from McGraw-Hill. Good book I am currently an apprentice took it upon myself to read this book, and I don't regret it. I have def, learned things and details that my boss of 40 years in the field could not teach me. Maybe it's he's old age or he just didn't know...lol either way worth every penny I spent :)
