I'm actually impressed of this guide as it was very detailed and it included illustrations and clear instructions. I have always wanted to learn Jiu-Jitsu but I actually have no knowledge of Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu. This is a great guide for beginners like me who are just getting to started and also to learn techniques without the need of having a teacher. I love watching people on TV use BJJ to kick the you know what out of their opponents. However, it looks so complicated. That is where this book really hits the spot. It shows you that it doesn't have to be so hard to learn if you just slow it down and move through the different steps slowly enough. It covers how you can find a school to learn the essential skills. It also tells you what you need to be to be a good learner. This book doesn't teach you everything you need, but it does teach you everything you need to know to get started!

Good, but not much new.

Almost all of the ritual material in this book can be found in the big hardbound 'Magick: Liber ABA' by Crowley. That said, there are occasional gems of commentary and footnotes that help clairfy some things in ways that footnotes and commentary elsewhere do not. This is especially true for the more Thelemic rituals (e.g. Star Ruby), which have not received the same kind of coverage as the LBRP, etc. This makes it useful for a serious Thelemic practitioner, but not very useful for a more general Ceremonialist. It might also appeal to someone who is generally interested in Crowley's ceremonial system and does not want to pay for Liber ABA.

If you don't grasp Crowley right away...

This is a highly useful book for the new initiates into the Thelemic system of Magick. For some people, it's difficult to grasp all of Crowley's concepts, so this little manual is highly reccommended. Even I, a recent initiate to the Thelemic system, have found it very useful even though I usually understand Crowley's ideas. I'd highly reccommend Magick In Theory and Practice in addition to this book, because that covers everything, and can be used for all other types of magick as well.

Great Introduction/Handbook of "Thelema" & Thelemic Rituals

This practical Handbook of Thelemic Rituals is a perfect Introductory guide, or quick-reference guide for Thelemites and other Crowley Enthusiasts. "The Magick of Thelema" --a collection of Aleister Crowley's Rituals, with commentary-- is perfect for the beginning Thelemite, Working Magickian (ritual scripts / instructions), Researchers of various occult schools, and others-especially, those who do not have the time to devote to doing this research on their own, yet....or for people who are just curious about Thelema, and do not have the inclination to spend a lot of money the subject, until they determine if their money would be well-spent (Crowley was a very Prolific writer). Basically, this is a "Thelemic Primer" which explains everything from the concept of "Aeons" to the reason Duquette saves the best Ritual for last: "The Gnostic Mass."
Anyone who has ever read Crowley is painfully aware of his rambling, self-aggrandizing (dare I say, babbling?) style, which is not conducive to the beginning researcher or Thelemite's comprehension of the subjects Crowley attempts to teach. Crowley's style is rather humorous and endearing to those of us who have devoted endless hours to reading his works, and those of us who have ingested "Magick Without Tears," but to the average reader, Crowley is almost incomprehensible (I think he enjoyed "teaching" in this manner).
However, Duquette has the wonderful ability to teach Thelema and Thelemic Ritual with a more rational, easy to comprehend method. Instead of rambling for numerous pages, then saying something of relevance, he cuts to the chase, and gives the reader the goodies, without all the extraneous verbiage (and rarely pats himself on the back, for his good work).
As one reviewer noted, "Magick: Liber Aba: Book 4" is the Ultimate resource book for Thelemites--and, yes, it contains many of the important books Crowley contributed to the field of Magick. However, it is not a good book to recommend to the Beginner and it is not a good reference book to pack-around in the Temple, due to it's size. Yet, Duquette's Handbook is amazingly concise, and portable (unlike the hefty "Big Blue Brick" -which, if dropped on your foot, will probably ruin your ritual with a broken toe!).
I know for a fact that it sometimes takes an essay just to explain to someone the convoluted history of "Magick: Liber Aba: Book 4" (ISBN: 0877289190)--and the book contains hundreds and hundreds of footnotes to explain Crowley's thinking process (not exactly a "Beginner's" introduction to Thelema). "Magick: Liber Aba: Book 4" is the perfect book to purchase after a person decides that they are interested in pursuing Crowley's Magickal teachings-but, personally, I will always recommend Duquette's books as an Introduction to "Thelema," instead of throwing them into the Deep End, with Crowley.
Duquette is one of the greatest personalities to become associated with Thelema and the works of Crowley. I have a lot of respect for Duquette and his writing style--he gets to the point, and doesn't waste my time congratulating himself with endless tangents. His humor is infectious and his Magickal endeavors are renown, without shameless self-promotion and exaggeration (as in Crowley's own writings).
Due to the complicated nature of the study of "Thelema," I recently created a "How to guide" which is a synopsis of a battle plan to tackle Uncle Al's legacy of Magickal Teachings--yet I believe Duquette's works are, truly, the best introduction to the study of Crowley / Thelema, because of Crowley's eccentric writing style. Duquette, thankfully, warns prospective Thelemites of the various pitfalls involved in the study of Thelema and teaches Common Sense approaches to the subject and Rituals.
I would not suggest throwing The Big Blue Brick ("Magick: Liber Aba: Book 4") at a New Student, until the Individual has read Introductory material such as "The Magick of Thelema." Duquette's concise, comprehensive exposition of the subject will save the beginner a lot of trouble and give the reader a great (and Safe) start along the Thelemic Path of Magick.

About the Author
Terryl Whitlatch is an accomplished, scientifically and academically trained illustrator who extensively studied vertebrate zoology and animal anatomy. She has worked for various zoos and museums in the United States and as senior consultant on Wildlife Art and Animal Anatomy for the World Wildlife Fund. She is considered to be one of the top creature designers and animal anatomists working in the field today. In a career spanning more than 25 years, Whitlatch has many projects to her credit, including Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Special Edition, Jumanji, Men in Black, Brother Bear, Dragonheart, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Curious George, The Polar Express, and Beowulf. For over seven years, she worked for Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic, and George Lucas’s JAK Films. Her illustration skills and comprehensive knowledge of animal anatomy and movement are essential in the development of believable creature creation.

Not much of a guild, but a good looking artbook.

Shipping -- Great. Amazon said it will show up in two days and it did.

As a teaching book -- Not so much. There are pictures and some anatomy terms labeling parts of the body but I can get that from my animal anatomy and ornithology book. There's a brief for each chapter at the beginning discussing the "Principle".

Example pictures -- Think of it like the artist comments in Deviantart or other art-posting site. There is a bit telling you the description on most full page images.

As an artbook -- Good. Not so much teaching, a lot of reused art. If you have the Creatures real and imagine book, then you might want to skip this in terms of an artbook collection. The pictures are printed in high quality.

A well written book on the British Industrial Revolution

I liked Emma Grifffin's style and she really gets to the key issues about the industrial revolution. I'm an economist myself (well at least trained as one) and I cannot disagree with any of her analyses. If you had believed that the education of the UK citizens and the development of then current scientific theory drove the IR, read the book--it did not. The real trick was relative wages (the British ones were high and gave a demand to make workers more productive with machinery) and coal (the British had the best and easy to access) which provide the cheap energy to use machinery. A book well worth reading.

Short and concise, but often overwhelming

"A Short History of the British Industrial Revolution" by Emma Griffin, is exactly what it claims to be: a short history of why England was the focal point of the movement. The amount of detail and statistics Griffin puts in the work is helpful, but to be totally honest it quickly overwhelms the reader. The book allows for the reader to become knowledgeable about the "Revolution" in a rather quick amount of time, and it easily should be everything you'll ever need about the British Industrial Revolution. I had to buy and read the book for a History class at school; then I had to read and compare this with other books on the topic, and to be honest this one was the best I read.

I wouldn't suggest this for readers who don't enjoy and overwhelming amount of statistics and numbers crammed into a small area. This book isn't made for an average read, it's made to get you up-to-speed with the historical event rather rapidly. If you enjoy all those aforementioned items then this is your book.

This book is a great addition to the move by move series by Everyman Chess because it continues with the trend of recruiting chess coaches and active players to write on chess opening .I recommend this book with a minor caveat. Players looking to use this book as a primer on the Alekhine need to read the book backwards because at the class level the minor continuations such as 2.Nc3 and the aggressive options such as the Four Pawn Attack and the Chase Variation are popular and critical. A great book (!)

This review was written partially as a rebuttal to the earlier One Star review. That reviewer got very upset by the semi-political remark in this book which had 'Bush' and 'Hitler' in the same sentence. I dont think the author was going to directly compare the 2 persons but this statement can be loosely interpreted. I do agree that Political statements should not be placed in chess books.
However leaving politics aside and just going over the chess material this is a really great book.

The author shows some great lines vs. the topical modern variation which is currently the number one choice of Strong GMs from the white side of an Alekhine defense. He shows the best line for black to combat it and concedes a slight edge which is a normal one from white side. He also shows another offbeat line , the Westerinen variation where Black moves ..Nb6 anticipating the C4 move by white. This line looks unclear and further research and master level (IM/GM) games are needed. It is a very good unbalancing try. Althought the main game shows that white indeed retains an edge, other tries by black in the main lines are shown which leads to an unclear game.

The other chapters are also well written especially the 4 pawns attack. I have not gone thru these chapters in detail but after going thru them, i will give Alekhine's defense another try. I used to play it but gave it up after varying results, I won some games and got crushed in others.

This is a true labor of love. The only caveat is the book is peppered with 'Pithy' comments by the author. Including the politically laden one which so upset the previous reviewer. Relax Sir, this book aint that bad to merit a ONE Star.

I will give it FIVE Stars for the chess centered material, leaving aside politics and history.

I have been a French player, and enjoy how the author demonstrates the pattern similarities and differences in opening ideas. The move by move format allows me to check my thinking with an IM and later with a powerful chess engine.

Ignore the fatwah!

This is THE book I wish I'd had before I gave up playing the Alekhine defense a decade ago, mainly because of the dreaded Voronezh system. There are antidotes to this and other attempts to punish Black for his impudent knight sortie, and Mr. Lakdawala is considerate enough to provide alternatives tailored to the varied temperaments of his readers. Having tried this book out with a student (whom I was unable to dissuade from playing the Alekhine's) I can say that he was able to replicate the feat Mr. Lakdawala recounts in this book, namely to play successfully against a stronger opponent with a minimum of study, grasping only the key concepts, having studied one or two well annotated games.
But a word about the hysterically absurd review that gave this book one star and urged readers not only to boycott the books of Mr. Lakdawala, as well as the entire list of publications by Everyman Chess. Please read the rebuttals appended to that review to form your own conclusions, and if like me, you see the monstrous distortion of argument for political purposes of that reviewer, you will wish to uphold the traditions of free speech and inquiry that are the cornerstones of the Western tradition by BUYING, not only as many books by Mr. Lakdawala, but published by Everyman Chess as well. Do not let the opponents of freedom, be they Middle Eastern terrorists, or middle aged Americans ignorant of history, win!

This book boldly ventures to cross some traditional academic boundaries, offering an original, philosophically informed argument regarding the nature of language by reading and interpreting the poetry of Wallace Stevens and the novels of Vladimir Nabokov. So it is a work both in literary criticism and in philosophy. The approach is strongly influenced by Walter Benjamin’s philosophy of language and Theodor Adorno’s aesthetic theory, but the philosophical thought of other philosophers—notably Plato, Kant, Hegel, Emerson, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein—figures significantly in the reading and interpretation. The essence of the argument is that, despite its damaged condition (standardization, commodification, staleness), language is, as such, by virtue of its very existence, the bearer of a utopian or messianic promise of happiness. Moreover, it is argued that, by reconciling the two senses of sense (sensuous sense and intelligible sense), showing the sheer power of words to create fictional worlds and destroy what they have just created, and redeeming the revelatory power of words—above all, the power to turn the familiar into something no longer familiar, something astonishing or perplexing—the two writers in this study sustain our hope for a world of reconciled antagonisms and contradictions, evoking in the way they freely play with the sounds and meanings of words, some intimations of a world—our world here, this very world, not some heavenly world—in which the promise of happiness would be fulfilled and redeemed. In the first part of the book, reflecting on the poetry of Stevens, Kleinberg-Levin argues that the poet defies the correspondence theory of truth to enable words to be faithful to truth as transformative and revelatory—what Heidegger calls “unconcealment”, translating the Greek. He also argues that in the pleasure we get from the sensuous play of words, there is an anticipation of the promise of happiness that challenges the theological doctrine of an otherworldly happiness and makes the religious experience seem like a paltry substitute. In the second part of the book, Kleinberg-Levin shows how Nabokov inherits Mallarm�’s conception of literature, causing with his word-plays the sudden reduction of the fictional world he has just so compellingly created to its necessary conditions of materiality: white paper, ink, print on the page. We thus see the novel as a work of fiction, as mere semblance; we see its conditions of possibility, created and destroyed before our very eyes. But the pleasure in seeing words doing this, and the pleasure in their sensuous materiality, are intimations of the promise of happiness that language bears. Using a Kantian definition of modernism, according to which a work is modernist if it reveals and questions the inherited assumptions about its necessary conditions of possibility, these studies show how and why both Stevens and Nabokov are exemplars of literary modernism.

Few if any philosophers have had the courage to engage the formal and conceptual difficulties of literary modernism, particularly its regulating idea that, as the poet St�phane Mallarm� argued, language is made of words but not of the things we use words to produce: concepts, propositions, descriptions, and even expressions of feeling. Not that the literary work lacks such things, but the materiality of its language is irreducible to any of these discursive functions. On the contrary, as David Kleinberg-Levin makes clear in this remarkable book, the sensuous material of language is itself the medium of aesthetic experience as well as an experience of world-making that transforms our relation to how things are. He develops his arguments by way of careful critical readings of Wallace Stevens’s poetry and poetics and by close attention to the self-reflexive features of Vladimir Nabokov’s novels, in which developments of plot and character are always mediated by innovative wordplay and ironic comments on the forms and conventions of fiction-writing that Nabokov himself is employing. Kleinberg-Levin’s principal argument is that, contrary to a good deal of received opinion, the prominence of “sensuous materiality” in poetry and fiction is not a symptom of a decadent aestheticism but the fulfillment of a truly philosophical aesthetics: namely, the transfiguration of our everyday world into genuinely desirable forms of life. Nabokov, in Kleinberg-Levin’s account, playfully explores the possibilities of language to draw upon its own sensuous divinity in the materiality and density of its workings, again providing us with a resource for originating meaning, reconciling the intellectual and sensuous, and intensifying beauty.
