A good introduction, good reference

This is one of the most readable mathematical statistics textbooks. The level of math used is just right for this course. You need to use is mostly univariate calculus, but partial derivatives may pop up in a few places. You also need to know matrix algebra to read most of the chapter on linear models. All derivations and explanations are clear. The statistics portion of the text starts with sampling theory. In fact, it has more on sampling than I personally wanted to learn, such as sampling from finite populations and stratified sampling. Then it continues with estimation methods and hypothesis testing. There is a very good chapter on descriptive statistics. The later chapters focus on specific models, such as comparing the means of two samples, analysis of variance, categorical analysis, and finally the linear regression. The first chapters summarize probability theory, so the text is very much self-contained even for those with no probability background. There is also a chapter on Bayesian methods, which I haven't read.

The two features that I personally like in this text is that for some models the author presents such modern and sophisticated topics like non-parametric statistical techniques and bootstrap methods for obtaining standard errors. Overall, this is a fine textbook. It gives a solid introduction to statistics for people who need to do statistical analysis on their own and for whom this is their first and last statistics course. This text also gives a nice introduction for students of statistics who plan to move onto more advanced texts. There are one or two places where the derivation is simple but gets a little daunting (I think one of them is one of Wilcoxon's tests). But in the end, you must accept one fact. This is a serious university level applied math text for sophomores/juniors. This book can't be read like a novel, though it is a very readable text as far as mathematical stats goes.

Ignore most of those negative comments from readers many of whom clearly have not mastered their calculus and probability skills before taking a stats course. Undergraduate mathematical statistics is a kind of a course that attracts lots of people from many different majors and math backgrounds. Some take stats only because they have to, not because they want to. In the end, (this may sound arrogant), but the quality and motivation of students in an undergraduate mathematical statistics courses may be very variable. Some probably do not belong in a serious stats course. Hence, the flood of negative reviews for this text.

Outstanding: undoubtedly the best text written at this level

This book is an introductory-level statistics textbook for people who are learning statistics for the first time, and who know some math but are not math wizards.

I am outright shocked at the low reviews given to this book. I tend to be highly critical of statistics textbooks, especially ones at this level. In my opinion, this book does an outstanding job. It balances making the material accessible with going into considerable depth, and it integrates mathematical theory with an emphasis on data analysis. The title of this book says it all: "Mathematical Statistics and Data Analysis". There are few other books that emphasize both theory and practice. This book certainly lives up to its title in this respect.

Perhaps some of the bad reviews are from frustrated students who are in classes that are moving too quickly for their level. Just because this is an excellent book doesn't mean that every professor will use it in an appropriate way. The exercises in this book can be tough and I think it would be possible to easily overwhelm students by assigning too many problems or problems that are too difficult. This book is only really useful if you are able to explore it at a slower pace, reading it and reflecting on it.

This book is not concise but it is not overly wordy. Rice is an excellent writer. The expanded discussion communicates aspects of the subject that are often overlooked, and helps build the students' intuition. This book is always readable and it is clearly written to be read and understood. In addition to communicating basic concepts, the book also explores numerous practical and philosophical considerations. For a book at such an introductory level, this text is remarkably deep.

One of the most attractive aspects of this book is that it is relatively easy to skip around in it. More advanced students or students with some exposure to probability will necessarily want to skip many of the early chapters. Unlike some of the more advanced texts (such as the Casella and Berger) where the chapters depend on and reference each other in a rather rigid fashion, this book is more flexible and thus can appeal to students with diverse backgrounds.

My last bit of praise is the integration of data analysis with mathematical theory. Distributions are introduced with a rich discussion of where, how, and why they arise in practice. Data analysis techniques, tests, and abstract definitions alike are introduced in such a way that they are rooted both to the abstract theory and to consideration of applications: this book is one of the rare texts that fully bridges the gap between the real world and the abstract models used to describe it.

I would recommend this book for a wide variety of different uses. This would make an outstanding textbook and it could easily be used for more than one course, or for courses at more than one level. It is a useful book to have on the shelf as a basic reference, and it is also very useful for self-study. My only complaint is that more books in the field of statistics are not written in the spirit and style of this one. In particular, I would like to see authors of more advanced books examine this book's strengths and use them to enhance their own writing. Or perhaps John Rice ought to try his hand at writing a higher-level text; I know I would be eager to see what he could produce!

Not for everyone

I work in a large corporation in a technical job. My primary motivation for buying this text book was to apply statistics to practical work-related problems. I loved this book.

I was also amazed to see all the negative reviews. My theory for the negative reviews is that many students have no conception what a real world application of statistics is all about. They think that if they get a job in industry; the statistics problems they encounter involves nothing beyond picking up their favorite statistics book, finding an exact solved example of the problem in the text, copy the formual from the example and then plug in some numbers and you are done!

Good health through better eating and exercise is more realistic that you'd think

I did a lot of research about nutrition, then I found this book where the work was all done for me. It is refreshing to find a doctor that wants us to get healthy through whole foods and proper exercise and avoid all the medications and all their side effects. The change in diet is easier than you think and becomes a lifestyle. Wholefoods are very tasty, especially when you eliminate the sugar. Everything else taste better after the sugar has is avoided.. I've got a sweet tooth and get chocolate cravings, but after being on a whole food diet, I don't get those cravings. I think this should be taught in schools. A good foundation can last a lifetime.I do have a spurge day once in a while, but get right back to healthy foods and am happy to do it. This book makes it easier. It is more of a pamphlet, so it's a quick read.

I'm reading this on my Kindle. Every day I read a short chapter and look for ways to incorporate this advice into my life. I like that he doesn't go into too much detail. He provides the footnotes if you care to follow up and probably has written or is writing a full explanation of all of it!

A favorite!

This is actually one of my favorites in the series. I would recommend that you read it in order. That way you will know the other characters.

Lydia Webster is a chef who moved to Fort Stockton with a job offer that looked like it would be the stepping stone she needed for her career, only to find out it fell through and ended up getting a job at a small cafe with a sleazy manager, who she has so far been able to keep at arm's length. Finding her motel room broken into and all her stuff stolen,is just about the last straw for her.

Chance Carlisle, a Rancher from Divine, who stops in to see her whenever he can, occasionally with his twin brother Clayton. Chance has fallin head over heels in love, Clayton has as well, but he doesn't think Lydia will want a permanent threesome so he is reluctant to even try. When Chance stops in for a visit he finds out her motel was broken into and all her stuff was stolen he takes this as a sign from heaven. He calls his brother to fill him in and they decide to offer Lydia a position as a chef for their ranch.

I love anything that Heather writes....and this is another great book. So hot and sexy....I LOVE Clayton...he's my favorite. I think if you like cowboys you will love this book. But, do yourself a favor. Get ALL of Heathers "Divine Creek Ranch " books, you will be so glad you did. :)

"Sometimes it's best to just jump on in, baby."

Lydia doesn't simply give in to the temptation of Chance and Clayton Carlisle, she embraces their love with her whole heart.

Are you in the market for one of those books that's chock full of sweet "awww" moments? You know the type of book I mean: the ones where the characters don't drive the reader nuts by spending more time fighting their attraction to one another rather than enjoying the chemistry. The books that don't expend vast amounts of time on correcting misunderstandings just to tie the characters up into a new emotional pretzel every other chapter. Conflict is fine, even necessary, but some authors wear the reader down with never ending angst. If you prefer the books that steal your breath with their passion and sensual romance, I have a treat for you.

Lydia Webster is determined to live her life by her own rules and make her own way. She loves her "mama-bear" big brothers but they have their lives and she doesn't want or need for them to interfere in hers. Not to say she's opposed to all men being helpful or supportive. Take the deliciously sexy, sweet and generous Carlisle twins. More specially, Chance Carlisle. Just when Lydia thinks she's hit rock bottom, Chance is there to bring her home and surround her with love times two.

Ms. Rainier has the perfect quote to describe the difference in identical twins Chance and Clayton. They are "two totally identical men who were completely different. Chance, who was her sunshine and air. The one who had saved her. And Clayton who was her moonlight and passion. Her lover." See, I bet you just said "aww". You're welcome.

The road to Lydia, Chance and Claytons' HEA isn't completely without issues. A gold-digger, an old flame and mouthy jerk each put some effort into creating a stumbling block for the lovers. As with all true love stories, these useless individuals are more annoying than actual trouble. Actually, it's one of Lydia's big brothers that cause Chance and Clayton any real pain. *Sigh* They never saw it coming.

I could literally go on and on about the clever dialogue, creative plot, the fluid storyline, built in soundtrack (my personal favorite touch by Ms. Rainier) and so on. This book is fulfilling on so many levels. Did I mention these three know how to set the sheets on fire? You aren't just in the room when things get hot, you're with them on the bed, the counter, the chaise lounge, the pier...bring a fan. Clothing optional.

Even if this is your first trip to Divine Creek, I have no doubt you'll enjoy Lydia, Chance and Clayton's story. There're several returning characters and some storylines from other books that are brought in but that should only whet your appetite to go find the other books and not preclude your enjoyment of this book.

Author Heather Rainer pens some of my favorite full length m�nage romance novels. I know each time I return to visit Divine Creek I'm going to meet and fall in love with a whole new and unique set of men and the woman lucky enough to catch their eye. With each new story I tell myself "this is going to be my favorite grouping" and then Ms. Rainier proves me wrong with a new installment to the series. The hallmark of an excellent storyteller is the ability to create a world where her characters continue to live on after the last page and where her readers beg for an opportunity to visit time and again. Lydia's Twin Temptation is a fantastic read and not to be missed.

The Multiplier effect !

This book is good.
I was confident that my son can get through the basics of basic Math : Addition , subtraction and Multiplication without spending the $130 a month on Kumon class. A year full of Addition and subtraction is a reasonable time frame, more is just fine. After few years of Kumon books ,I felt he is ready to jump into Multiplication. This book has nice multiplication sheets but for every multiplication table 2 ( or 3 or 4 until 10), it has only two or three pages, and so You cannot avoid supplemental worksheets from the Internet.

MY METHODOLOGY:
I found this technique very effective, and so sharing with you.
DAY ONE : Make photocopy of page no 1, 2,3,4 and 5
DAY TWO : Skip Page number one, add Page number 6 and so on.
Revisit earlier exercises if Kid is not comfortable,and then spin the wheels again.

BACKGROUND:
I have two kids , one who attended Kumon classes and another who is doing Kumon at home, courtesy of all the books out there. Since both of them are few years into Kumon, wanted to share my experiences and probably help few young parents who might be debating sending their kids to Kumon vs teach at home.

Let them do 5 -10 minutes of Kumon before you leave the hotel to Disneyland (It is not cruel, your kid's competitor is an unknown chubby face in Singapore or skinny dry haired boy from India,not your neighbor's kid with top level expertise in XBox). Home work for next day should be ready the day before;not bring the copies from office and by then the kid is tired.

This discipline is difficult; and I can attest to it.

Let the kid do the homework soon after they are back from School. Try to have them do at the same time everyday, sitting in the same desk; not in your lap one day and on a dining table the next day. If you find it difficult to enforce consistency, put them in Kumon. Let them do Kumon while fresh, not sleepy. If they ask for help, turn off the stove, help them and then resume your tasks. Cook food, do Laundry, mop floors but do not watch TV (mute or no mute) while they are doing Kumon. If they have not finished after 15 minutes, you gave too many pages or you pushed them hard.

RESULTS COMPARISON:
My younger kid is fast in basic Math related to other kids in his class ,but my elder kid who had the advantage of physical class was much faster when she was his age. All is not rosy with Kumon. Kumon is brute abstraction , detached from real world examples . One thing I noticed is that my elder kid, while ultra fast in calculations,thanks to Kumon gets easily bogged down by word problems.Sometimes adds up where she needs to subtract and vice versa.

Remember A kid who is in Kumon (Physical class) generally has a calculation speed that mimics a calculator. I doubt if these books will ever accomplish that feet.

Birds can be among the most difficult wildlife subjects to photograph, because they tend to be small, fast, and elusive. However, they are also beautiful and immensely photogenic. Young, one of the most published bird photographers in England, here provides both an excellent primer for the novice and advanced tips for the experienced photographer. Two excellent chapters introduce the equipment needed to photograph birds, explaining the uses of various lenses, teleconverters, and types of film. The meat of the book is in the third chapter, where photographic techniques are discussed. Young is a master at dryly telling funny stories about some of his past mistakes and using these stories to illustrate what he should have done. He gives numerous hints about finding places to photograph birds, using the equipment, and utilizing blinds. Chapters on selling the resulting photographs and learning from one's mistakes complete this extremely useful book. Nancy Bent

Solid advice for novice and expert alike

This book offers some ideas and techniques I hadn't really encountered elsewhere. For instance, Mr. Young suggests and even encourages new bird photographers to spend lots of time photographing common or even tame birds at parks. For most of us who become serious about bird photography, we have come to it as birders, and you know how *they* can get! If not, read The Big Year, and you'll find out. Point being, as birders we seek the unusual, and when we become photographers, we will do the same. Mr. Young elegantly makes his case for the birds in the park, suggesting that learning tricks of exposure, flight shots and all the standards can be learned with a bit less waste of film.
He also gives some good advice for equipment that might be less costly for those of us without the income to support supertelephoto lens habits. I had not heard of the photoadapter setup he shows, but will probably explore this option.
Most of all, he gives excellent advice on all aspects of bird photography; equipment and film selection, location and approaches, and various techniques. I found his liberal use of side by side photos showing the same bird shot with different techniques and approaches to be very helpful. Mr. Young is not afraid to share his mistakes as a teaching tool. He also includes a chapter on archiving, so that one can begin to learn from mistakes made.
All in all, I have gained much from this book and highly recommend it. For me, the one downside is that he is based in the UK, so he is talking about birds and locations there, but this added a bit of fun, as he discusses shooting such rarities as the American robin!
