The premise that there is one "true north" for all CEOs, generating top quartile total shareholder returns relative to peers, is one that has become a widely held and generally accepted belief. As a result, the real hurdle is no longer one of establishing the value maximand at the highest levels of an organization, but rather providing a blueprint for HOW to cascade these beliefs down through an organization.

The concepts are real and usable, and not obvious ...

The concepts are real and usable, and not obvious to many before the fact. It becomes clear that when using generally accepted accounting principles you can end up with a house of cards (negative value that appears to be positive value) when it comes to making real money and growing the value of a company! This is more of an engineered approach to building a corporation's value! If you are reading this as a non-executive or without a finance background (as I read it as an engineer) I would suggest a quick study of one prerequisite concept. Google the definition of WACC (weighted average cost of capital) to keep in mind the effect of tying up cash in an asset vs. borrowing against it as it applies to the cost of capital. This is not a book just about that concept, but you need to understand the weighted average cost of capital after borrowing is what is being referred to often. Then you are ready to begin reading.

About the Author

Joyce Hill Stoner is the Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Material Culture at the University of Delaware. She has taught painting conservation for the Winterthur-UD graduate program since 1976 and also heads the doctoral program in Preservation Studies. She has written more than 80 publications and has won awards for scholarship and teaching from the AIC, CAA, and Heritage Preservation.

Rebecca Anne Rushfield, a graduate of the NYU Conservation Center, is a New-York-City-based conservation consultant with a particular interest in the history and literature of the field. She is active in the work of the American Institute for Conservation and the ICOM Committee for Conservation and was a recipient of the Rutherford J. Gettens Award for outstanding service to the AIC.

....to dream of conservation....

I got this book as I do all my ART and Art Conservation books, for information.
And this is a most informative, detailed book...information is important.
It is about the conservation process, not about the making of art, but the considerations we conservators must make before, during and after fixing artworks. Each work of art is different, more so as it ages.
It is not for artists, not even for art-historians, nor art-dealers really; but for everyone interested in saving works of art. A few weeks ago, I paid $355.00 for the Hardcopy, happily...worth every penny, in fact it is worth more, much more, even $1000! ( I guess one could get the Kindle Ebook for 30 bucks saving, but really? 30 bucks?). Do not hesitate to buy this book before only the conservation libraries have the only copies left. Do not ask me for my copy. I have hundreds of books on conservation, hundreds more on art techniques, art processes; it is very important to know how the artists worked, the preparatory canvases, stretchers, paint layers, the coatings. This new book would sit next to my Kurt Wehlte book called "Materials and techniques of paintings". As conservators, we have to know how things age: it is all physics, color and light and chemistry; pressure, temperature, humidity. Knowing how to repair the works of art, so others can enjoy them in the future. Anyway, think what things will cost in the future, and what real ART Books cost even today. Thank you Joyce and Rebecca, and all those who made this book possible

This will be the gold standard in paintings conservation

Ar a conservator with forty years' experience in paintings conservation, I eagerly awaited this book.

My stomach always tightens when I have to pay what I did, but as soon as I browsed through it I realized that it is not only worth every penny, but would be a bargain at twice the price. There is no question in my mind that \this be the gold standard in the field.

And what an extraordinary endeavor! no wonder it took as long as it did; it is a herculean effort.

An excellent introduction to the subject

As a volunteer science reader for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, I have probably read 20 beginning Biology texts cover to cover in the past 10 years. This one is by far my favorite. It is extremely well-written, has amazing illustrations, and is one of the few introductory texts that treats plant biology as more than a footnote to the biology of animals.
The book never talks down to the reader and is engaging enough that even volunteeers with no interest or background in science looked forward to working with it and on more than one occassion I had to stop recording because my monitor wanted to ask quetions about the current subject.

A very understandable and logical book on the fundamentals of commodities

I bought this book in 2006 but I felt I owed it a review since it got me started on a lucrative career in trading commodities and since I totally panned Rogers later book “A Bull in China.” In Hot commodities Rogers gives a general overview of why we were in a commodities bull market (in 2004). Roger’s theory is more qualitative than quantitative but it is logical, well presented, and understandable. Rogers discusses commodities market cycles and the underlying causes for these cycles. While the longer term commodities bull market is now in question the book is still useful to help make judgments today on underlying fundamentals. Commodities are not a popular asset class compared to stocks and bonds yet easier to understand. To me that makes commodities investing far more interesting. Better to trade where is there is less competition. I am amazed that Rogers can produce two opposed books like “Hot Commodities” and “A Bull in China.” Hot Commodities challenges the conventional wisdom on investing while a “Bull in China”, quite the opposite, goes right along with the conventional wisdom.

How Commodities Work and Why You Should Care

"In commodities trading knowledge is the gateway to making money" says Jim Rogers. "My goal is to show you how to think about commodities before you put any money on the table." This book is full of basic information on the world of "things" as Roger's refers to commodities, plus numerous examples, verifiable facts and entertaining anecdotes.

It is not, however, a complete guide to commodity speculation. There are already a number of good books on that subject (see Jack Schwager's books among others). Hot Commodities is an introduction to the world of commodity speculation from the viewpoint of one who has made a fortune in it over the past four decades.

Very few investors pay attention to the commodities world. Rogers claims that any of us, whether or not we take a position in a commodity, can improve our edge as an investor by learning more about how commodities are affected by supply and demand and how they in turn affect company profits, national economies and consumer behavior.

The first four chapters of Hot Commodities introduce the reader to commodities as an asset class distinct from stocks, bonds and real estate. Rogers covers the typical objections to commodity investing put forth by stock brokers and financial advisors, describes the history and operation of commodity futures markets and describes alternative means to enter the market through futures, options, ETFs and equities.

Chapter 5 looks at China and explains how it will drive the commodities boom for decades. His assessment also addresses the downside risks to Chinese capitalism and warns about the severe pullbacks (50%+) common in major bull markets and how to handle them (use low or no leverage; buy dips) so you can stick with the long-term trend. He concludes that China will overcome its challenges and wise investors would do well to get aboard.

The last five chapters examine five markets: oil, gold, lead, sugar and coffee. Each exemplifies how a master investor researches, analyzes and evaluates a particular commodity in order to gain deep understanding of market fundamentals. A concluding chapter sums it all up.

What I value most is insight into the mind of Jim Rogers the investor which he so generously shares with us readers. Rarely do those of us outside Wall Street get the opportunity to view the thought process and work product of a true market wizard. Whether or not you plan to or already do invest in commodities, and whether or not you agree with Rogers' opinions, it is difficult to argue with his mastery of commodity investing.

I rate the book three stars. Why only three? It is not essential reading for a trader (-1) and significant portions of the content (but not the core value) are now out of date (-1). I first read it in June 2005 and just re-read it to see how his predictions fared. In a word: astounding! I suspect that you will feel the same way if you choose to read the book.

About the Author
Ryan McGlen is Senior Advanced Technologies Engineer at Thermacore Europe Ltd. where he leads research and development of future heat pipe technologies. Current research interests include novel heat pipe materials and working fluids combinations and additive layer manufacture of aluminium heat pipes with complex 3D Sintered Style wicks (SSHP).

Peter Kew first became involved in heat pipes in the late 1970s as a research officer with International Research and Development working on a range of heat transfer and energy conservation projects, including heat pipe development which was then led by David Reay. He has maintained this interest for over 20 years as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at Heriot-Watt University researching evaporative heat transfer. Currently Dr Kew is Associate Head of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Heriot-Watt University responsible for the School’s activities on the Dubai Campus of the University.

David Reay manages David Reay & Associates, UK, is a Visiting Professor at Northumbria University, Researcher at Newcastle University, and Honorary Professor at Nottingham University, UK. His main research interests are compact heat exchangers, process intensification, and heat pumps. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Applied Thermal Engineering and Author/Co-author of eight other books, including the second edition of Process Intensification published in 2013.

I bought this book to come up to speed on heat pipes and find out whether the theory and manufacturing techniques apply to a different problem I am working on. Thanks to the clearly written material which overviews the theory and applications I found it easy to come up to speed. What a great idea. The complete "Dave Funk's Tube Amp Workbook" without the schematics for half the price! Now you can learn all about tubes amps without the expense of paying for the Fender schematics. Maybe you're only into Marshall, or VOX amps. This book still has you covered. Dave explains amps from each individual component, to how they're assembled into a circuit, what effect each part has, and you end up with an understanding of the complete amp. He explains what parts can be changed, and the range of usable values, and what effect the mods will have. He also explains how tubes work, why tubes sound louder than transistors. (BTW, Dave now builds the world's best solid state bass amp). Dave's built or modified amps for the players, bands, or on the records of Garth, Shania, Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, Steve Wariner, Tony Joe White, Charlie Daniels, Marty Stuart, Tracii Guns, Michael McDonald, Norman Brown, Billy Dickens, Billy Bob Thornton, Andy Williams, Billy Dean, Jauqo III-X, Janelle Monae, etc. From country to rock to jazz. He knows how to get tone and chime out of an amp.

Good rather oldfashioned Zorro!

I love all the great new artists like Jason Shawn Alexander, Mike Mignola, Frusin and many others but my heart beats in a special way when Esteve Polls (The Lone Ranger) does the art because it gives memories to good old Dell Comics and Classics Illustrated. Polls is close to the art of John Severin and that is super. The story is good and the coloring so fine. It is great to ride with Zorro Again!
