I had a great fear of death from then on

This was a wow book. So much resonates with my inner sense of what happens when we die. I recently lost my husband and must say his transition gave us gifts beyond imagination. I lost my mother when I was four and subsequently an aunt and uncle I lived with before I was nine. I had a great fear of death from then on. My husband was on life support and myself and his four daughters had to make that decision we all dread. I had been his caregiver for sixteen years. Everything surrounding us during the hours of saying good bye contained miracles and love beyond earthly measure. After reading this book I understand why. We were blessed with heavenly help and held in the love we shared with husband and father. He was with us. I don't have the words to express my heart and all that is in it, in this moment. Read the book and you will never look at death the same way again. You will feel blessings and joy.I miss my husbands physical presence but I know the true essence of him is as close as my breath. Love never dies nor does the spirit of us. Such peace

Insightful and inspiring. A must read!!

An interesting and thought provoking novel that gives insight into how Katrina communicates to people's deceased loved ones and encourages spiritual connection with them. Katrina's experiences highlights the fact that death is very much a part of living and that the messages passed on to loved ones, helps them accept the predicaments of their circumstances more readily. Highly recommend that everyone should own a copy of "Wisdom for Your Life".

I enjoyed reading this book

I enjoyed reading this book. Cavanough’s approach is authentic. She is no guru and doesn't attempt to come across as one. She is compassionate and respectful of death, and she understands the confusion and disruption that death brings to those left behind. This is not a "woo-woo" book. It reminds us to be grateful for each moment that life presents and is a book I will hang onto.

A Priceless Slice of Time

Forget Elizabeth Taylor and her impossibly gorgeous wide mauve eyes. Forget Mickey Rooney. "National Velvet" has nothing to do with Hollywood, and everything to do with a microcosm of time, England between the Wars, in a working-class society that no longer exists.
The Brown family, staunchly working class, gets by on a pittance. The hugely obese mother, who misses nothing through her "hooded eyes," was once a world champion swimmer, the first woman to swim the English Channel. It is her spirit, her sense of competition and the right of women to step out of their structured lives, that has been passed down to her youngest daughter Velvet. And THAT is what this story is about: the strength of one young girl to rise above every restriction of her class and society, and to excel where no woman has ever excelled before.
So in one sense, yes, this is the story of a young girl and her love of a horse. And it is thrilling on that level. It is also the story of a society that cannot ever exist again, but that, for all its restrictions, was ruled by love of family and a strong sense of right and wrong. And third, it is the triumphant story, long before feminism was in vogue, of one small woman who overcomes centuries of prejudice to become a champion. What else does one need?
There are other characters in this book who are as interesting as Velvet: Her older, beautiful but vacuous sister Edwina, who slithers out at night to meet her boyfriend; her second oldest sister Malvolia, another "thoroughbred beauty," her impossible baby brother Donald, who collects his own spit in a bottle he keeps on a cord around his neck; her staunch, but mostly silent working-class father; and of course, Mi, the groom whose love of horses and fierce loyalty to the Brown clan hides some terrible secrets he refuses to reveal.
Add the Piebald, the most wonderful fictional horse ever, and you have a story for the ages: the story of a young girl who finds and trains a wayward horse, and takes him all the way to England's famed Grand National, where she dresses as a boy (no female was allowed to ride) and takes her horse--and hersef--to glory.

still a favorite after 30 years

I received this book when I was 9, loved it immediately, and kept it on my bookshelf always. I'm almost 40 now and just reread it (it's one of my "comfort" books) and was once again blown away by the beauty and astonishing metaphors of Bagnold's prose.

She is a lovely writer. I wish I could write as well as her. Our window into the Brown family is clear and uncluttered; we get to watch as the girls relate to each other, speak in their own family shorthand, deal with their similarities and differences. I adore the way the family accepts each other - each with their own quirks and peculiarities. Velvet, with her profound love of horses and her very 14-year-old imagination. Merry immersed in the world of canaries. Edwina on the brink of adulthood. Mally, Velvet's closest friend, sharing candy bars and secret plans.

I was such a girl myself, with my own imaginary stable of mounts... but my appreciation of the book goes beyond a recognition of similarity; Enid Bagnold simply writes with a sophistication few writers for young adults share... with no condecension and no need for explanation.

Better Than the Movie

The most remarkable aspect of National Velvet is that it was written in 1935. The story of a girl who pushes beyond her culture, age and social position to achieve unprecedented glory is told without condescension or preachifying. In this, it outstretches books of its own time, many more modern books and even its own movie. Enid Bagnold isn't trying to make a point, she is telling a story with wit, vivacity and considerable insight.
This lack of moralizing is due mostly to Ms Bagnold's characterizations. The most important of the characters--Mi, Velvet and Mrs. Brown--are portrayed as complete individuals with thoughts and flaws and attitudes that are a reflection not so much of their surroundings but of their innerselves. They are human, not representative.
The story moves quickly, apropos to a novel about a horse and a horse race. The dialog between the family members takes getting used to, being cryptic and more unsaid than said, as is typical with family communication. The average reader is confronted by unfamiliar vocabulary and references, which have to be accepted and then ignored. If this can be accomplished, the passion of Velvet will carry the reader through to the end.
Recommedation: Buy it.

Beware advice on how to have a successful career...

From someone who doesn't have one, at least in the regular business world.

Yes, Gen Xers and Yers are moving into the workforce and redefining work, etc. etc. However, in most industries and companies, there are still baseline levels of comportment, behavior, etiquette, etc. that people are expected to maintain. I have worked for two Fortune 1000 companies and what I have found is that in many cases, the younger people moving in to replace Baby Boomers aren't rejecting their values and beliefs wholesale, as Trunk would have you believe, but adopting some and rejecting some others. Overall, I see more people buying into their own corporate culture and carrying on at least the major tenets than rejecting it completely.

Trunk admits on her blog she's been fired many times for a wide variety of offenses, including insubordination, inattention to her work, etc. One of my old bosses, who had an MBA from Stanford, said it best - always beware of people who make a career out of writing about having a career, rather than actually having one. I am not sure what credentials being a professional beach volleyball player gives you in the business world, but I don't necessarily think that being a professional blogger and getting one book published indicates someone is at the pinnacle of their profession, and therefore in a position to be dispensing advice to others. I don't claim to be at the pinnacle of my profession, but I can also say that I've never been fired for blowing off work assignments to work on freelance jobs. I've actually never been fired, period. My best piece of advice to any generation of worker is this: almost any company, big or small, is looking for people who make some attempt to fit themselves into the system, to some degree. While I don't believe that the whole system of paying your dues by working like crazy until you reach a particular job title is still relevant in all companies, I do think that most people are not going to be successful by going into a job and trying to get by on their looks and iconoclastic personality from day 1, which is basically what Trunk advises.

I recently read a fiction book where the author described a workplace where employees were divided into two categories: Golden Children, who could get away with almost anything without really putting their time into their work, and Work Horses, who picked up the Golden Children's slack. Most workplaces I have been part of fit that characterization pretty well. And I admit that as a Work Horse myself, being a Golden Child looks pretty good sometimes. But here's the thing. A career is a marathon, not a sprint. People do need to think strategically and make smart moves at the right time, but glossing through job after job after job expecting your looks and your chutzpah to carry the day isn't going to lead to the substantive success most people are seeking. Especially for women, relying on your looks to get you places isn't the safest bet. There are new, younger, hotter women coming into the workforce every day that you keep getting older. Somewhere along the line, you need to have some kind of skills and experience to deliver what you've sold people on. My suspicion is that Trunk was a Golden Child who couldn't deliver, time after time, and so therefore had to "create her own career" when she ended up basically unemployable after job-hopping/being fired too many times.

One more word about money - it's great if you can sponge off your parents while you find your place in the work world. It's great if you can live on $40,000 a year. Maybe for Trunk, money doesn't equal happiness, but in response to that idea, I will steal a line from one of my favorite movies and say: Look at the freakin' smile on my face - ear to ear, baby. I've worked in jobs I loved for no money and jobs I hated for a lot of money, and I can safely say that the best thing is to work a job you love that ALSO pays a lot of money. Which is totally possible, but I don't think Trunk's tips will get you there. It takes a mix of aggressive decision-making and hard work to really get to the point of true success, which is not purely defined by money, but to me, is defined by the ability to have some level of financial security (to the point where you don't have to go into debt to take a few weeks of maternity leave) and satisfaction with your work.

So advice seekers, beware this book. I imagine that if someone who is truly successful, who has truly managed to combine work and family life (like Meg Whitman of eBay) would take one look at Trunk's resume and think it was a joke. The advice in this book certainly is, and I hope there aren't a bunch of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed young career women out there taking it. What Trunk describes in this book is not true success. It's the truest version of success she's managed to talk herself into accepting, because she got handicapped by her own limitations.

Should be titled "Bad Advice: What To Do If You Want To Collect Unemployment"

Here's nothing more than a rehash of terrible advice that you can get for free by reading the author's on-line column. She seems to think that looks and appearance are what count, not skill or experience. Note that the author's career entails not working for corporate America; her thoughts on how to do little with the least could be helpful if Jim "The Cruise" Anchower needs another job to support his beer and weed habit. If you really think this could be interesting or useful (which it isn't) - be smart and just read the free on-line archive of the same.

Bad advice for most people most of the time

This book was a disappointment to me, containing significantly more bad advice than good advice. I agree with the reviewer that said the book reads as the product of the experience of an upper middle class kid who never had to worry too much about the consequences of failure or unemployment (and unemployment is where you will probably find yourself if you follow her suggestions). Do yourself a favor and look somewhere else for career advice, because most of what Ms. Roston writes about in this book is not applicable to the working situations of the great majority of people. Follow her advice at your own peril.

In my opinion, you should not buy this book.

Incomplete and inconsistent collage

The article of 19 pages is incomplete with numerous errors. It has no pictures, but makes reference to them. It appears that the author pieced together paragraphs from various newspaper articles. The overall effect results an illogical rambling of buzz words. Do not waste time with this. It should be removed as a choice for Amazon readers.

WORTH EVERY PENNY

Wow! What a Great find. This book might be twenty some years old

but it still rates at the top of Historical's I've ever read.

They just don't write them like this anymore and that's a pity.

Nowadays romances have to be "correct" which makes them very dull. Quinn and Noelle fight their feelings for each other til

the bitter end. It's edgy and frank but that's what makes this

story so absorbing. The plot is fascinating...the heroine, Noelle and her mother, a would-be actress, are strapped for money. Noelle is only eight when her mother takes her from her bed to escape debt collectors. They end up on the street and eventually in a hovel where the only work her mother can get is

selling her body to men who sometimes pay and sometimes don't.

Noelle sees and understands what's going on and when her beloved

mother dies and Noelle finds herself alone she swears she will never become a whore. So she becomes a pickpocket! The best.

That is until she tries to lift a pocketwatch from the friend of

Quinn Copeland, heir to a shipping empire. Quinn and his father

are at odds and since his father has been insisting Quinn marry

a girl from a upstanding family what better way to get back at

him by marrying this little guttersnipe and depositing her with

his father and then leaving for a year.

Thus begins Noelle's transformation from Ugly Duckling to a beautiful woman. When Quinn returns and realizes the woman he

thinks is his father's mistress is really his wife the sparks fly. The passion is seething as these lovers brutally battle

each other. And there's so much more. Get this book if you can.

You won't be dissapointed especially if your sick and tired of all the lukewarm romances being offered now a days!!

I am very happy I found this publication. I had been trying to locate this book through my library. I found it in an interstate search but it was not allowed to be taken out of the library and it was located in the southern part of my state and I live in the northern part. After much searching I found it and purchased it. I love the author even though she wrote under a diffrent name for her first book. I
wanted to be able to say I had read all of her books. Now I can. Thank you for making that possible.

After many months (years?) of trying to obtain this novel - even going so far as to contact SEP - I finally obtained this novel through Amazon. And yes, it was worth every penny.

What interested me was that it was apparent from this novel that SEP was obviously very talented, if not as gentle as she haas later become. The book was well written and a study in characters that grew to understand themselves and each other. Quinn and Noelle grew up in different worlds, yet the same. Quinn's father, Simon, was himself a tormented soul and Quinn could not recognize that fact until the end. As Noelle put it "I am human and not perfect".

This was truly a fantastic historical that was well worth the time and effort to find and read.
