Meh. Mediocre and overstated

I bought this book to prepare for a continued education class at UCSF where Dr. Nanda was the speaker.

Dr. Nanda is apparently a big name in orthodontics.

However, I felt that I wasted my time (closing my practice for the day) and $$$. His book (and lecture) cover the most basics of biomechanics and esthetics. In his lecture, he went over the same basic slides and several (mediocre) case presentations over, and over for 5 hours! For three more hours, he was trying to sell his newer book and name drop.

This is the same basic crap covered in the first week of Ortho block in dental school!

I would highly recommend avoiding this book. While there is some information of merit, the same thing is better covered in the Profitt book.

If you want a truly great book, this isn't it.

Get the Ikeda book if you want challenging information that will force you to grow. Get the Profitt book if you want a good basic reference.

As for Nanda, give me my wasted time and money back!

Learning to Speak

The main idea behind this book is that just as people have unique personality preferences, we all have unique preferences for what we find satisfying and motivating when it comes to love. Your love language is the way that you most feel loved and cared for. The problem is most people love how they want to be loved, and that doesn't tend to align with how their partner wants to be loved. So, you have to learn to speak your partner's love language. The author also believes that focusing intently on speaking the love languages will rekindle relationships where people don't even seem to like each other anymore.

My only critique is that they didn't focus more on understanding and discussing your emotions. For this you and your partner should read Emotional Intelligence 2.0. It did wonders for my husband and I.

The relationship expert who wrote the book arranges the book into the five love languages, and provides quizzes to help you determine which language you are:

- Words of Affirmation:
If this is your love language, you feel most cared for when your partner is open and expressive in telling you how wonderful they think you are, how much they appreciate you, etc.
Basically, they find ways to remind you that their world is a better place because you are in it.

- Acts of Service:
If your partner offering to watch the kids so you can go to the gym (or relieving you of some other task) gets your heart going, then this is your love language.

- Affection:
This love language is just as it sounds. A warm hug, a kiss, touch, and sexual intimacy make you feel most loved when this is your love language.

- Quality Time:
This love language is about being together, fully present and engaged in the activity at hand, no matter how trivial.

- Gifts:
Your partner taking the time to give you a gift can make you feel appreciated.

Where's The Needle On *Your* Love Tank?

How's your relationship with your mate? Your children? Your parents? Your siblings? It may be a matter of the state of the "love tank".
Author Gary Chapman in his book The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate believes everyone has a love tank, and that tank is filled by different love languages. These five languages are Gifts, Words of Affirmation, Quality of Time, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch.
Often, we tend to give love in the languages we are most fluent in, which usually ends up being the languages that fill up our love tank. This would be why a husband who does yard work, dishes, car maintenance, etc. (Acts of Service) is floored when his wife says "You never show me you love me. You never cuddle with me, or caress my hair, or make the first move for sex." (Physical Touch). Or, "Why don't you spend time with me? Why do you work so much?" (Quality Time). And, "Why don't you buy me flowers? Why don't you ever get me cards or balloons...just because?" (Gifts) Or "You never tell me what I mean to you. Why don't you ever share with me what I mean to you, or what my good qualities are?" (Words of Affirmation) But, if her language is primarily Acts of Service, she'll feel so loved and honored because her husband does so many things for her, and thus feels "full" in her love tank.
This may not sound like a big deal, but considering the divorce rate is 50% (as one relationship instance), and so many seem to be unhappy with their primary relationships, the concept of love languages may very well be a signficant factor in understanding self and others, and in relationship growth. Perhaps relationships get rocky or arrive at an impasse because individuals are speaking a different love language than what fills up the "love tank" of the object of their affection...and a result, the recipient doesn't feel loved. It's not that they feel empty and unfufilled because love isn't being given, but because the language "spoken" is not something that registers to the recipient as a form of love.
Chapman further theorizes that we usually have 2 main love languages that fill up our tank. He also says that if a person has a hard time identifying their main love languages, they've either been on empty for so long and are out of touch with their needs, or they have been so filled up by their spouse, that all 5 languages tend to speak to them equally.
A story in the book that illustrates the love tank theory is the "burnt toast syndrome". A woman was sick in bed. Her husband would always bring her burnt toast to her when she was ailing. She was so hurt and offended by this repeated insensitivity and ignorance, that she finally burst into tears one day, and asked him why he did that...and didn't he care? She was floored to hear him say "I'm sorry honey. I had no idea. Burnt toast is my favorite, and I gave you what I would consider my favorite breakfast...burnt toast."
Chapman writes: "When your spouse's emotional love tank is full and he feels secure in your love, the whole world looks right and your spouse will move out to reach his highest potential in life. But when the love tank is empty and he feels used but not loved, the whole world looks dark and he will likely never reach his potential for good in the world."
I recommend this book highly. It could very well be a relationship saver!

Saved my marriage

This book is absolutely incredible. Having serious marital problems, I was desperate for any kind of help. I was about to turn to counseling when I heard about this book. I decided to buy it so that my husband and I could read it together.
Not expecting too much, one lazy morning I suggested to my husband that we lay in bed and begin reading this book out loud to eachother. We read 120 pages that morning! We could not put it down! Both of us shed a lot of tears that morning, this book really hit home.
That morning when we woke up, everything seemed hopeless for us. After reading this book, we had hope that our problems can be resolved. Our attitude toward eachother has greatly changed since we read this book.
Basically this book explains that people feel loved in different ways. For example, my love language is "quality time" and my husband's love language is "personal touch." Without quality time with my husband, I feel unloved... my husband feels unloved when we have a lack of physical contact. Our love languages are so different... before reading this book, I just thought that my husband wanted more sex for selfish reasons. When in reality, personal contact is what he needs to feel loved. Before reading this book, my husband hated when I nagged about spending time together.. but now he realizes that spending time with me is the best way to tell me that he loves me.
Dr. Chapman says in this book that LOVE IS A CHOICE. Find your partner's love language style, then choose to show love to your partner in that way (it's not about what YOU need to feel loved, it's about what YOUR PARTNER needs). I thought that spending quality time with my spouse was the way I can show him I love him. In reality, that's MY love language, not HIS.
Even if your partner does not want to read this book with you, there are ways you can begin to repair your marriage on your own, and before you know it, your partner will begin to reciprocate.
This book is INCREDIBLE. I plan to pass it around my friends and family. Please invest the $12 and read this book, your marriage will never be the same again!

Multirate and Filter Banks from an engineer's perspective

Vaidyanathan's book is a very concise, yet enjoyable book on multirate systems and filter banks. Multirate systems and Filter banks represent some of the state-of-the-art research even today, and I'm a strong proponent of introducing the basic concepts as early as possible, even in the first DSP course.
Vaidyanathan is an engineer first, mathematician second. Note the difference between his approach and Mallat's approach, for example. He relies more on intuition albeit sometimes lacking purpose, which makes this book more readable for the engineers but hard to read cover to cover. This makes this book a very handy reference if you need to pick certain topics up in a hurry.
He also has a very nice, but very concise, review of basic DSP concepts and introduction of basic multirate system properties. However, the speed at which he covers this can be discouraging to some.
Some people would argue that his writing can be hard to read, and this is true sometimes. But his geometric interpretation of lattices and filter banks is more than worth the price of admission.
Nonetheless, I would still recommend this book to engineers interested in either learning about multirate systems and filter banks, or for a reference book.

is not the focus. The large number of examples and figures
make it easy to follow (reading it from cover to cover is
not that difficult). The intuition beyond the theory is well
developed, at the expense of a light mathematical treatment.
The geometrical and algebraic view provided by Vaidyanathan
is unique and probably deserves to be taught in any DSP course
for engineers, even at the introductory level. Signal processing
people however could find its style too intuitive but engineers
should like it as a reference book in these topics.

The best elegant book on filter bank

Among the few books on filter bank and wavelets which I read and then gave up, this is by far the best, albeit the oldest, one. It gets right into all theoretic details about filter banks in such elegant words and mathematics that often pursuade me to read further just for the fun of it. Even its chapters about quantization and compression provide deeper insights than most other books that undertake singal compression as their only task.

About the Author
Shel Silverstein is best known as a children's-book author who wrote and illustrated a number of bestselling books that have charmed millions of readers of all ages. Crossing many artistic boundaries, he was also a noted songwriter and an accomplshed playwright. Silverstein first came to prominence in the 1950s as a cartoonist for Playboy, where he assumed the role of roving ambassador for the up-and-coming magazine. This esteemed assignment -- due in no small part to his friendship with Hugh M. Hefner -- was the auspicious beginning of a most amazing career. Shel Silverstein died in 1999.

3 grandchildren can't be wrong!

Our 6 year old grandson then a boy/girl set of 31/2 year olds think this is the funniest book ever! Now I have to buy one for our other 3 year old granddaghter. Syd is my giggler . . . . she also loves Todd Parr books . . . bright colors . . .few words on each page . . giggle, giggle, giggle. I know Shel has left us, but such a great legacy he gives to our grand children. As a grandparent, I can think of nothing better than to teach our children to read & appreciate good books. Thank you to all you writers, artists & publishers . . . and especially Amazon for your easy distribution.

It is a sweet, sweet book and perfect for the preschool age.

collection piece

While not the best piece in my collection, it was worth the purchase. The harem ladies each tell a tale of passion so the book is a series of short stories. A quick and light read, the stories are not overly graffic but lusty enough to keep your interest.

Read it in 1947

I can't believe I found this book on amazon. Believe it or not, I read it in 1947 as part of a mixed teen reading group in Sheep Tracks, Alberta. A local sailor brought the book to our small town [pop 550] after serving in WWII. Our group of boys and girls, ranging from 14 to 16, met at the local train station in the waiting room around 7 pm. The room was 20 ft. by 20 ft., benches on all sides. A pot-bellied wood burner was located at the center of the room and a warm fire each night set was welcomed by all. Boys and girls alternated reading a chapter out loud to the group. I was one of the 14 year olds and my voice was changing at the time. I nervously squeaked through my chapter to the delight and laughter of the others, particularly the girls. As luck would have it, one of the 16 year old girls walked home with me after my first reading, took pity on me and I received my first wet kiss.

In our book, each sexual event was described in detail. Then, for the man to regain his strength, each harem girl told the story of her first encounter ... 16 stories in all, one story for each of us to read aloud. Great education in 1947.

This book cotains 14 chapters. Each chapter is an erotic story that leaves wanting to know more. The stories are explicit but ambiguous enough to let your imsginstion fly. I did enjoy all the tales!

The author is a sought-after speaker at Business Analysis conference - most recently BA World San Francisco and Vancouver. He plays a leading role in the industry (Business Analysis), as designer of BA training programs for a number of large training institutions (Boston University, TriOS, Humber College, etc.), Subject Matter Expert for the NITAS BA program (co-sponsored by US Dept. of Labor and CompTIA), and reviewer of the profession's standard book of best practices (the BABOK, owned by the International Institute of Business Analysis). Podeswa, through his role as Director for Noble Inc., has provided BA services internationally to a diverse client base, including the Canadian military (MASIS), the U.S. nuclear industry and the insurance and finance sectors.

Comprehensive, Difficult to Navigate, Assumes a Software Solution, and Relies on Meetings

The good news is that if you are a Business Analyst or need to understand the work of business analysis, Podeswa gives you a framework. That is no small thing, and for that, he is to be commended. Whereas the BABOK (Business Analyst Body of Knowledge) gives you a model, Podeswa gives you what you could use as (though he would protest) a method or process for doing this work.

Because this is an encyclopedia of techniques and terms, it isn't the most user-friendly book. It has lots of stuff, but most of it is listed alphabetically, not by situation, so you have to know what you are looking for to find it.

And then, two beefs with his approach to this work that may not bother others.

First, he assumes that Business Analysts will be part of software implementation. I understand that his approach has to account for that, but a large, large portion of my work and people who have done this work for and with me has stopped short of a software implementation. Just process work. Just understanding the problem. Etc. He doesn't offer disclaimer enough for my taste that a Business Analyst may put his/her time to good use serving ends other than software development or implementation.

Second, he assumes that decisions happen in meetings. He includes lots of great meeting design templates and checklists. My experience says that meetings are not where real conversations take place. If you wait until that point to look for consensus, you are asking for trouble. The meeting will either make official what has been decided elsewhere or (God help you!) give lip service to the proposal until the REAL discussion happens in the hallway. So a Business Analyst may do all that Podeswa says to set up good meetings--and still not get the commitment to a decision he/she needs.

Still, this is a useful addition to your library--for now.

Excellent Reference

Some of the reviews written on this site are rather odd. It seems some people must have expected this book to be written for entertainment. It isn't a comic book or a love story. It isn't a book you are going to read in a week and miraculously become a Business Analyst.

I found the writing to be very clear, explanations well thought out and concise, and the overall composition to be structured in a professional manner. The structure follows the BA's modus operandi making it extremely easy to know which section of the book to turn to for a quick reference.For CBAPs and practitioners you would understand that it follows the BABOK structure. To the layman, consider that part of the title identifies it as a "Handbook".

This is a paperback but, physically, it is a big book weighing several pounds. The text is a medium font. I wear reading glasses normally, but they are not necessary with this text. The pages are a non-glossy off white making it easy to read in natural or artificial lighting. I can read this book for several hours with only a minimal amount of eye strain.

The Business Analyst's Handbook is a reference. No, it is an Excellent reference. It is detailed with numerous charts, models, and definitions. I am enjoying reading it. But, then, one of my degrees is in Economics and I thouroughly enjoyed reading all of my textbooks in that discipline.

Every BA, PMP, and aspiring practioner should have a copy of The Business Analyst's Handbook on their shelf for a quick refresher.

Great Reference for BAs

Have been a BA for more years than I care to acknowledge :) and found this book to be very informative and a great reference. Particularly appreciate the detailed questions to ask stakeholders that have never occurred to me. They say you never know how ignorant you are until you learn something. Well, I've been ignorant and thankfully a more knowledgeable after reading this book. A great tool for any BA.
