Suggestions

If you have found this book and are thinking about purchasing, you may have a child like mine. If so, I am writing this review to you - other parents go elsewhere! lol - I think this book is going to save my son's life. He sits for HOURS to do five minutes, and I do mean five minutes worth of homework. It makes me BAT CRAP crazy!! Like Home Simpson choking Bart crazy. This is part II of what is going to save his life this year at school. There is really great advice in each chapter. And here is where it gets hard for you parents - YOU HAVE TO READ, highlight, take notes and THINK about how you are going to CONSISTENTLY apply what SOAR is telling you. I set time aside to go through one chapter at a time - perfectly easy and do-able. I read through the book twice. And now I am going to have my son read through the relevant parts that I think will help him. (He's ten going into 5th grade - already at a disadvantage because of his VERY young age - I know, I know.)

Part I that will save your child's life is to pick up John Rosemand's book on Homework - you can find it here - "Ending the Homework Hassle" or something close to that. BAM! This book will give you the swift and sturdy kick in YOU THE PARENT'S butt. Couple it with the suggestions in the SOAR book and life will beging to come together for your family. John Rosemand will give you the courage to let your kid fail BIG and the SOAR book will give you the tools to teach your child how to remedy his (or her) big failure at school.

Just Good Stuff!

Purchased this for my 14-year old as she enters high school. Hoping to help her identify study/comprehension skills that will be great tools to use in her high school career. She is doing the exercises and reading it without any direction from me! She even presented me with one of the challenges on observation. This has been a plus for her summertime reading. Hopefully it will help her in this next chapter.

I would recommend this book to parents looking to give their kids the tools to be successful.

Now, Its Up to You - A Good Summer Read

First noteworthy comment: on Amazon the hardcover is selling for $91.83 new; $13.47 used and .99 for a completely new, Kindle edition. Second, the title is deceptive: sounds like it would be focused upon the first five books of the 'Old Testament' - it is not!. Rather, it could be characterized as finding Christ through out these five books. Third, this is a 150 year old book which necessitates some reading skills. Fourth, it is a theological book with a history of being highly recommended for its inspiration and information. Fifth, if you want to read and understand the manner in which the 'Old' and 'New' Testaments are one unit rather than two, get and read this book.

I have only read a few dozen pages, but the way the author pulls the whole of the bible into the chapters and verses as he expounds upon them is excellent in my opinion and I have never seen or read a study that does that. I am sure my satisfaction is going to be greater, the more I read.

A most imaginative insight into man's creativity

This fascinating work is more a collection of essays than it is a continuous volume. However the descriptions in each archaeological and bio-neurological section are indisputably accurate and written in a clear language with contributions of leading academics. There is no room for circumstantial evidence as the analogies here presented are indubitably justified.They lead to the hypothesis of an underlying non-conscious cognitive process. The authors, Philippe Roi and Tristan Girard, will reveal, in a forthcoming volume, the thesis by which a 'neural code' would elucidate the causes and consequences of the analogies presented in this first tome. The illustrations are excellent and add to the understanding of the given analogies. There is no doubt that this publication will lead to fierce opposition, as it is the case with every significant contribution to the corpus of neural-scientific research, and will help strengthen the thesis.

Original, Exciting Scholarship

This is a fascinating and I think ground-breaking book, whose argument is backed up with excellent illustrations. It enhances our understanding of how the senses function, and how the development of various instruments has been inspired by them. It is clear, readable and intellectually stimulating. A great book.

This is an excellent resource for ideas on ecological restoration treatments to implement or experiment with in deserts. The restoration treatments covered in this book are diverse, ranging from techniques for retaining water on site to increasing plant survival through various protection treatments. I have been working on desert restoration projects for a decade, and this book is one I regularly consult when planning restoration projects. In addition to the practical ideas on specific treatments, the book provides a readable overview of desert ecology and a good context of desert restoration.

I highly recommend it for young children

This book is very sensitive to the feelings and needs of young siblings of those who have type 1 diabetes. The child without diabetes may feel ignored while so much attention is given to treat diabetes. There isn't much help available for the child without diabetes. This book fills a real need. I highly recommend it for young children.

This is one of the best "sibling" books written, it gracefully highlights the challenges for the child with diabetes and how that effects everyone else. It's heartfelt, sweet and should be available for every family with type 1 diabetes in it. It's good for all ages.

We brought this book with us to the Emergency Room!

I got this book for my son (he was 2 1/2 yr. at the time) so he would be prepared for the dentist when we went. He loved the book and wanted to read it over AND over, and loved finding the duck that is hidden in some of the pages. But it came SO helpful when my son cut his lip open and he had to go to the ER to get stiches. Before we left I grabbed this book to read while we were there because I had a feeling he would need stiches and we would talk about the part in the book when the boy gets a shot. It was SO helpful in trying to explain to our son what he needed to expect and he understood! My son is now 3 and still asks to read this book! I highly recommend it!

Not for kids who might be scared

Although this book gives a good chronology of what happens at the dentist, I found it cold and distant. Neither child's feelings are addressed. I was expecting a book that might describe how funny it feels to have someone poking around in your mouth, what the mouthwash tastes like or how wierd it is to go so far back in the chair. And there is absolutely no mention that either child might be nervous or scared. Instead it's just a list of statements. The older child needs a filling. Come on, HOW SCARY IS THAT? And yet the kid doesn't even blink.

This book is neither personal nor engaging.

If I had known it was like this I wouldn't have bought it.

I have a two year old who has not yet been to the dentist. I bought this to help prepare her for her first dentist appointment. This is now one of her favorite bedtime books and she enjoys finding the "hidden" yellow duck on each page. I liked that they explained how the denist and hygenist wear masks, the bright light to see in patients mouths, and that the chair reclines. I had not even thought about how a young child may be intimated by these things.
